Clean-In-Place (CIP) is an automated cleaning system used in industries where hygiene and contamination control are critical. It allows cleaning without disassembling equipment, ensuring efficiency, consistency, and regulatory compliance in industries such as food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology.
How Clean-In-Place Works
CIP systems use a combination of water, cleaning agents, and controlled temperature & pressure to clean internal surfaces of pipes, tanks, and production equipment. The process typically follows these steps:
Pre-Rinse – Removes loose debris with water.
Detergent Wash – Uses alkaline or acidic cleaning agents to break down residues.
Intermediate Rinse – Removes detergent and dissolved contaminants.
Sanitization (Optional) – Applies disinfectants or heat treatment for sterilization.
Final Rinse – Ensures all cleaning agents are removed.
Types of CIP Systems
Single-Use CIP – Uses fresh cleaning solution for each cycle (common in high-purity applications).
Recycling CIP – Reuses cleaning solutions to reduce waste and cost.
Multi-Tank CIP – Separates detergent, rinse water, and sanitizers for optimal efficiency.
Single-Tank CIP – A cost-effective system where cleaning solutions are mixed in a single tank.
